 Guest Speaker:

Mr. Jeffrey Flaks, President and COO of Hartford HealthCare

HHC has 19,000 employees and $2.8 billion in net revenue. It operates six acute-care hospitals and extensive ambulatory, home-care and behavioral health networks. Hartford HealthCare is Connecticut’s number one provider of ambulatory surgery, behavioral health, cardiac surgery, outpatient imaging and orthopedics and regional leader in acute care, home care, urgent care and women’s health.

Under Mr. Flaks, Hartford HealthCare has doubled its net revenue, sustained an eight-percent growth rate and seen a 70-percent reduction in Serious Safety Events. During his tenure, total HHC locations have grown 30 percent to 225. He helped create and sustain HHC’s unique Institute Model – a reshaping of major service lines to provide a single high standard of specialty care across the system. Nationally renowned physicians now direct the institutes, which have expanded access to care and generated double-digit, state-leading growth. With his guidance, HHC has made great progress toward achieving its vision of “being most trusted for personalized coordinated care.”

Prior to his current position, Mr. Flaks served as COO and then as president and CEO of Hartford Hospital, HHC’s 164-year-old flagship tertiary care center. There, he oversaw a dramatic financial turnaround, with the hospital moving from a deficit to a consistent five-percent margin. Hartford Hospital achieved national ranking in U.S. News & World Report early in Mr. Flaks’ tenure. The hospital is annually named by the magazine as number one in its region.

Previously, Mr. Flaks was COO at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, Conn., which was named by the Society for Human Resources Management as one of 50 “Best Small and Medium Places to Work in America.” It also received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award – convener status. Earlier, he served as vice president at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of New York and held several leadership roles at Continuum Health Partners in New York City and the Detroit Medical Center.

Mr. Flaks has received numerous honors over his career, including selection by Modern Healthcare as one of the top 12 industry leaders in the nation and being named one of the 50 most influential people in Connecticut by Hartford Magazine. He was honored as one of Crain’s New York Business “New York’s Rising Stars: 40 under 40” and has received the American College of Healthcare Executives’ Regents Award for outstanding leadership. He is widely published and has presented at numerous national and international conferences.

Mr. Flaks is graduate of Ithaca College. He earned a master’s degree in health services from The George Washington University and has served on the university’s Board of Trustees, Alumni Association and the President’s Advisory Council. He also has received the university’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

Among his many professional and civic appointments, Mr. Flaks is director of the Connecticut Science Center; Connecticut Public Broadcasting and the Connecticut Hospital Association.
