Beyond the Hype: How to Make Responsible Bets on AI
AI has become one of the most discussed — and misunderstood — topics in healthcare strategy. The promise is immense: automation that relieves administrative burden, analytics that improve forecasting, and insights that drive better financial and operational decisions. But amid the noise, health systems face a critical question: Where should we place our bets, and how do we do it responsibly?
In this session, Peter Smith, Managing Director at BRG will moderate a panel of experts. Smith has experience working across the health sector encouraging responsible AI use to drive efficiency and generate additional value. He will be joined by technology and strategy leaders — Andy Hickl, veteran AI executive and founder at the intersection of tech and healthcare, and Lee Schwamm, MD SVP and Chief Digital Health Officer YNHHS, Associate Dean, Digital Strategy & Transformation, Professor of Neurology and of Biomedical Informatics and Data Sciences, Yale School of Medicine. Together, they will cut through the hype to explore what it means to make disciplined, ethical, and ROI-driven investments in AI.
Discussion topics will include:
- How to evaluate AI opportunities through a business-case and governance lens
- Where AI is already creating measurable value in health systems (e.g., revenue cycle, workforce efficiency, supply chain, patient access)
- How to build responsible governance frameworks that protect patient trust while enabling innovation
- What it takes to move from isolated pilots to scalable enterprise capabilities
Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to identify, fund, and govern AI initiatives that are desirable to stakeholders, viable for the business, and feasible to deliver responsibly.
